Kelly’s Upside Down Vegetable Garden – Update 03

This is the update for Thursday June 11, 2009. I am going on a business trip so I thought I would get this posted before I leave. All I added this week is a 10 gallon bucket of Carrots but they haven’t started coming in yet. Other than that I have lots of new growth on the tomatoes and the squash is all of a sudden starting to take off. I will say that keeping the suckers pruned back on the tomatoes allows the plant to concentrate on fruit as opposed to leaf production. It’s also a good idea to keep any dead or damaged leaves off of the plants because it won’t spend time trying to repair them. You want the plants to spend all their time on new growth and fruit. Keep the comments and suggestions coming. It is always great to get everyone’s feedback on what I am doing and get new ideas. Happy Gardening!!

Garden Update 6-27-10.wmv

This week’s update. The peas are about done and the bush beans are coming on strong. Still a while away for ripe tomatoes, but they are progressing well. I had enough green beans to try pickling a few. The next step is pressure canning of tomatoes and sauce. I seem to have avoided or at least controlled the blight that lowered the tomato yield last year and may be on the way to more tomatoes than we’ve ever had. Not that that’s a complaint!

Garden Pest Update: Slug vs Copper

I bought copper tape to repel slugs from my raised bed vegetable patch. Here’s a slug trying it on for size — not the dramatic response I was expecting — I was hoping it would curl up and drop off on contact. But, hey, he did crawl away. Posted on my blog, theroot.wordpress.com

Tomato Update #3

The tomatoes are starting to ripen now, and I have some maintenence work to do on them in order to get the best crop.
