2010 Nederland veggie grow log 1
This is the first video in a series documenting my attempt to grow vegetables at 8000+ft in Northern Colorado. I’ll try and update these weekly or bi-weekly depending on the progress. For germinating I have hung a florescent fixture (4 T5 2′ bulbs) about 12″ above the soil. I am also using a seedling heating mat which brings the growing medium above it to 10-15 degrees warmer then the ambient temperature. The seeds are in peat pellets inside a humidity dome to keep things nice and moist. So far I have planted Brandywine tomatos, Serrano chilis, and Habanero chilis. I put the seeds in peat-plugs on 3/4 and had my first seedlings come up 4 days later on 3/8! The combination of bottom heat, full-spectrum florescent light, and high humidity seem to be working well. I hope to see some chili sprouts within the next 4-5 days. I am also in the process of building a vermicomposting bin so that I can start turning my kitchen scraps into usable compost for the veggies this summer. At the moment I have multiple adds on Craigs list looking for supplies (for free!) and worms to get started.

There are few things in life as good as your own herb, grown by yourself at home out in the garden and indoors in pots… Oregano, Dill, Basil, Sage and other herbs are all easy to grow. Mint will take over the whole yard if you let it. Fresh mint and celantro are incredible in salads and oriental dishes. But it all comes down to a truly motivational herb that is your friend and mine, a great healer and teacher to those that know it well. Most people think of gardens as a seasonal, yearly project, but its actually less time consuming and more rewarding to keep the garden going year round. If one were to attempt to grow year round, indoor gardening techniques will be needed at least during winter to keep the garden producing. You will have herb fresh at all times, there is no worry of mass storage thru the winter and spring, it requires less space, and once established, requires only minimal attention every week to keep it producing at optimal levels. The best part of being a gardener is it connects you to the earth. It connects you …
