2010 Nederland veggie grow log 1
This is the first video in a series documenting my attempt to grow vegetables at 8000+ft in Northern Colorado. I’ll try and update these weekly or bi-weekly depending on the progress. For germinating I have hung a florescent fixture (4 T5 2′ bulbs) about 12″ above the soil. I am also using a seedling heating mat which brings the growing medium above it to 10-15 degrees warmer then the ambient temperature. The seeds are in peat pellets inside a humidity dome to keep things nice and moist. So far I have planted Brandywine tomatos, Serrano chilis, and Habanero chilis. I put the seeds in peat-plugs on 3/4 and had my first seedlings come up 4 days later on 3/8! The combination of bottom heat, full-spectrum florescent light, and high humidity seem to be working well. I hope to see some chili sprouts within the next 4-5 days. I am also in the process of building a vermicomposting bin so that I can start turning my kitchen scraps into usable compost for the veggies this summer. At the moment I have multiple adds on Craigs list looking for supplies (for free!) and worms to get started.
Bucket Garden June 13, 2010
The latest update of my bucket garden. I made some changes to the garden, putting 2 new 5 gallon buckets, and replanting one of the smaller ones. Some lessons, learned: Miracle Gro Potting mix is probably the best thing to use, some plants need additional water from the top. The watering tube alone doesn’t seem to be enough in hot weather.

Garden Videos 2010 – Raised Beds
I was asked how I build raised beds. I also went on a rant about ankylosing spondylitis(AS) and health issues but I also want people with AS to see that it isn’t all doom and gloom but, that, with careful planning and slow work things can be done. My spine, neck and ribs are pretty well fused now but it’s important to keep as active as possible because fusion cannot be reversed.
